Have you dreamed of writing lyrics? This course might be just for you if you have a strong desire to write but haven’t dared to try lyric writing yet. In this short course, we will go through a simplified model for creating lyrics.
The course is a brief introduction for beginners and those interested in lyrics. It doesn’t offer all the answers, it straightens out some complexities, but perhaps you’ll find an easy and fun way to get started. The most important thing is to begin. Writing lyrics is an ongoing learning process, and no writer is ever truly finished.
In the course, we will cover the basics and write. You only need motivation to write and good sitting posture.
In this short course, we will create a text that, if successful, could potentially be set to music. Due to the course’s concise nature, the style will be limited to pop (pop, pop ballad, and schlager genres).
You can participate in this course even if you are not a musician or music creator. However, having a background in music or playing instruments can be beneficial in lyric writing, although it is not required.
Song lyrics are a unique art form. They are not composed poetry, but a text that relates to the melody. They are one, and together, they create something greater.
Now, there’s no need to be nervous. Just start exploring lyric writing with confidence. Let’s keep it simple and have fun!
Course Objectives
The goal of the course is to encourage and inspire participants to enter the world of lyric writing. The aim is to learn an easy method and progression model for lyric creation and understand the structure of lyrics. During the course, students will write blank texts (texts without music) and try to identify ideas and phrases that can support lyrics.
Course delivery
The course includes independent video materials and assignments, as well as 2-3 remote meetings conducted via Zoom for the student group. Students will receive concise feedback from the course instructor on their written texts.
In the first meeting, the group will gather and prepare for writing. If necessary, the group will meet briefly again during the course. Any additional meetings will be arranged among the group members. In these meetings, challenges related to writing will be addressed, and the instructor will support the process. In the final meeting, the texts created during the course will be reviewed.
Study materials will be published on the Rhythm Academy online platform at www.rytmiakatemia.fi.
The course is free for participants and is organized as part of the Cluster project, developed by the Rhythm Institute and South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, co-financed by the European Union. The course is also supported by the city of Seinäjoki and the Kuortaneen säästöpankkisäätiö. Learn more about the Cluster project at: www.rytmi-instituutti.fi/klusteri.
